Tóm tắt Metaphors have been a topic for studies since as early as more than 2000 years ago. Metaphors have attracted quite a number of researchers who are interested in linguistics, rhetorics, literary critics, etc. Metaphors are commonly seen as the change in the names of objects, entities…based on the similarities between them. Therefore, this study attempts to probe into the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The study is intended to fulfill the following objectives: The first is investigating the conceptual metaphors of “life” in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese. The second is making a comparison between expressions of conceptual metaphors used for describing life in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese. Finally is suggesting the implications for the teaching and learning of conceptual metaphors denoting life in English. In this study, the quantitative and qualitative methods are applied in order to achieve its aims and objectives. In addition, this research is also carried out on the base of contrastive and comparative analysis so as to make an investigation into the similarities and differences in the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese from cognitive semantic approach. The results of the the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese from cognitive linguistics perspective reveal interesting insights into the 11 conceptual metaphors in the 32 short stories bot in English and in Vietnamese. Besides, the most noticeable one in the study is that there are no metaphorical expressions manifested in LIFE IS A PAIN found in English short stories, while no evidences show that LIFE IS A PERSON exists in Vietnamese ones. This may be because of the different cultural and historical background of two countries.
