Tóm tắt
| Metaphors have been a topic for studies since as early as more than 2000 years
ago. Metaphors have attracted quite a number of researchers who are interested in
linguistics, rhetorics, literary critics, etc. Metaphors are commonly seen as the change
in the names of objects, entities…based on the similarities between them. Therefore,
this study attempts to probe into the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in
typical short stories in English and Vietnamese from the perspective of cognitive
linguistics. The study is intended to fulfill the following objectives: The first is
investigating the conceptual metaphors of “life” in typical short stories in English and
Vietnamese. The second is making a comparison between expressions of conceptual
metaphors used for describing life in typical short stories in English and Vietnamese.
Finally is suggesting the implications for the teaching and learning of conceptual
metaphors denoting life in English.
In this study, the quantitative and qualitative methods are applied in order to
achieve its aims and objectives. In addition, this research is also carried out on the
base of contrastive and comparative analysis so as to make an investigation into the
similarities and differences in the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in
typical short stories in English and Vietnamese from cognitive semantic approach.
The results of the the structural and ontological metaphors of “life” in typical short
stories in English and Vietnamese from cognitive linguistics perspective reveal interesting
insights into the 11 conceptual metaphors in the 32 short stories bot in English and in
Vietnamese. Besides, the most noticeable one in the study is that there are no metaphorical
expressions manifested in LIFE IS A PAIN found in English short stories, while no
evidences show that LIFE IS A PERSON exists in Vietnamese ones. This may be because of
the different cultural and historical background of two countries. |
